I am working on a new AFL Ladder Widget, it will be a completely new widget for the 2009 AFL season, with new a new look and rewritten code. I hope to have the widget ready before the first round starts, but as in past years, I don’t expect that will be possible.
The problem is that the websites the Widget uses to fetch the ladder data from do not normally have their own ladders up and working correctly until the end of the first round of the regular season. It is not until then that I can work out the URLs that are required by the Widget. In past years (I’ve been working on the widget on and off since early 2005!) it has not been possible to work these out until after the first round and I can’t see this changing this year.
But the new Widget will have a new look, be optimised for Leopard but on the whole will be familiar to those who have used the Widget in the past.
So stay tuned!

I finally got some time to address the issues people have been having with v1.5.4.
So here’s v1.5.5 which hopefully fixes the problems people have been having. The problem seems to have been due to the dodgy way I was storing the preference for the ladder data source in the preferences file. This update should fix it - but let me know if it doesn’t!
This version also introduces a refresh button on the front of the widget and fixes the ladder data from finalsiren.com.

There seems to be a problem for some people where by the new AFL Ladder widget doesn’t load properly. The problem seems to be with the widget preferences file.
I suggest closing the widget down, delete the widget preferences file (found under ~/Library/Preferences/widget-org.dyndns.expat.widget.aflladder.plist) then relaunch the AFL Ladder widget. You might also need to restart dashboard or reboot your Mac.
Ready for round 2 of season 2008, go to the AFL Widget page to download it.
I had to make fixes for all 3 sources this time around, hopefully they won’t change again in round 2!
Let me know if it’s working ok for you.

In what seems to have become a annual ritual, I’ve got an update to the AFL Ladder Widget on the way for the Mac OS X Dashboard.
This release fixes the ladder data fetching routines that have broken since the end of the 2007 season (the finalsiren.com and afl.com.au sources had stopped working with v1.5.3) and the update doesn’t introduce any new features. Don’t hold your breath for any new features either, I simply don’t have the time!
I might hold back on releasing it for the time being, perhaps until the season starts so that I don’t have to go through the same trouble I had last year of releasing a “fixed” version before the season started only to have it break again after round 1!
Your widgets should alert you when the new version is available to download.
Carn the Crows!

This release fixes a minor problem due to sportal.com.au changing their ladder page recently.
The previous version of the widget (v1.5.2) should keep working with the other two sources (afl.com.au and finalsiren.com), but the new version also includes a couple of minor tweaks to the tooltips for finalsiren.com.

There’s a new version 1.5.2 available for download. It fixes the minor problems with the ladder that have cropped up after the start of the season.

Note that afl.com.au is still having problems providing correct data, as can be seen in the previous game data in the widget tool tips. The data shown is what the AFL is providing. The Win/Draw problem eventually sorted itself out, maybe the rest of the data will be right some day too!

Version 1.5.1 introduces the option of selecting between 3 different sources for ladder data:
This is due to the fact that the AFL keeps changing their website faster than I can fix the widget!
Sportal.com.au is the default for now because the AFL site isn’t showing any ladder data as of 26/03/07, but it might come back on line one day.
Having 2 or 3 different sources for the ladder data makes it less likely that the widget will break if one of the sites decides to change format because it is unlikely that all the sites will change at the same time.
So let me know if there are any problems with the new widget, once again, it may need tweaking once the season starts later this week!

EDIT: I have a new version in the works, it allows you to select between 3 different sources for the widget to use for fetching the ladder data. I’m hedging my bets on the fact that it is hightly unlikely that all 3 sources change their website layouts at the same time! It’s going through the final stages of testing and should be out in time for the first round.
No sooner do I release a new “fixed” version of the widget for season 2007 then the bloody AFL go and change things on me again!
The AFL Ladder Widget v1.5.0 has been updated for 2007 to use a new ladder data link from the AFL Website. This link was active during development of the widget. However soon after releasing it, the link has stopped producing valid data, resulting in the “Error with Data” message reported by the widget.
The page reference I found the ladder on has even stopped displaying the ladder but hasn’t disappeared entirely, which leads me to hope that the ladder will start working at the address once the season starts.
I am aware of this problem and monitoring the situation, but the widget might not be ready in time for the start of the season, it might depend on when the AFL brings their own ladder on line or me giving up on the AFL site and using a different source for the data.

Ok, so I think I’ve got a new version of the AFL Ladder ready for action in 2007, shoot on over to the AFL Ladder Widget page to get it. The new widget has an option to show more team information in the tool tips that appear if you hover over each team name.
I say “I think” because since the major rework of the AFL website for this season (it now uses AJAX and XML files all over the place) there is a potential problem if the AFL doesn’t actively update the XML data file the widget now downloads and uses to generate the ladder. The AFL hasn’t brought the season 2007 ladder page on line yet so there’s no way to tell 100% if the widget will work properly until the season starts and they update their own ladder.
But I have been monitoring the contents of the XML file over the last couple of weeks and it has been changing to show the results of the pre-season games so that gives me some confidence that the XML source file is at least somewhat ok. There are still some quirks with the data in the file (all in the recent results and past results data) which will become clear if you use the new option to display the extra information, but I am hoping that will improve as the season proper begins.
So here’s hoping the thing works ok, otherwise I might have to tweak it again after the season starts…
